The Vending Machine That Stole a Baby in Chamonix

Trail Runner's UTMB week dispatch goes somewhere between prophecy and sleep deprivation.

UTMB week in Chamonix does things to people. The valley fills with helicopters, headlamps and several thousand runners in a state of permanent low-grade panic, and by the third night the town stops making ordinary sense.

Trail Runner's dispatch from the week is filed under the best headline of the season: a story about compulsion, longing, creation, vending machines, helicopters, Biblical prophecy, flight, abduction, rashes, headlamps, rolled ankles, and realization. That is the author's own list. Chamonix in August, more or less exactly.
