THE CULT

One Screening, One Year Inside Laz

The Hillbilly Scientist, an authorized documentary on the man behind the Barkley Marathons, screens exactly once in Chamonix during UTMB week.

Gary Cantrell has spent four decades building a race designed to break people, and mostly refusing to explain himself. Directors Paul Mellor and Luke Jarmey spent a year with him anyway. The result is The Hillbilly Scientist, the first authorized documentary on the Barkley Marathons founder.

It screens once. August 27, Chamonix, in the middle of UTMB week, the loudest room in trail running watching a film about the sport's most deliberately quiet man. Jasmin Paris, John Kelly and Rich Roll all sat for interviews.

One year of access. One screening. No second chances, which is very much the point.

Barkley has always run on scarcity: no website, no entry form anyone will admit to, five loops almost nobody finishes. A single showing in the Alps is the most on-brand distribution plan imaginable.
