She Traded Skis for a Swiss Mountain

Jessie Diggins has four Olympic medals in cross country skiing. In August she raced Sierre-Zinal in Switzerland, which is not a hobby race. It is thirty one kilometres past five peaks over four thousand metres, the most beautiful start list in mountain running, and a course that eats specialists.

Crossovers usually go the other way. Runners try skiing, discover technique, retreat. Diggins arrived with an engine built for exactly this: hours of climbing at threshold, poles or no poles, in thin air. The mountain does not check your discipline at the start line.

Every so often an athlete reminds you that the sport is smaller than the appetite. This is one of those.
