A Split Toe on a Rocker, With Eyes

Melitta Baumeister unveiled the Nike Rift Rocker at Seoul Art Week: crackled upper, supersized curved sole, and a pair of eyes staring out of the heel.

After her hand-painted takes on the Vomero Premium and Pegasus Premium, Melitta Baumeister has moved on to Nike's strangest running-adjacent shoe, the tabi-toed Air Rift. The Rift Rocker debuted at Seoul Art Week with a heavily modified, extra-chunky rocker sole carrying a debossed Swoosh, and a crackled upper that gives the split toe a raw, tactile finish.

True to Baumeister's surreal, amorphous approach to garments, a playful pair of eyes stares out from each back heel. Her name runs across the Velcro strap and cursive Nike wordmarks sit on the heel strap and midsole. A NIKELAB SEOUL installation in Jongno-gu showed it to the public on September 5 and 6.
