Two World Records Fell in One Zurich Night
Alison dos Santos ran 45.80. Minutes later Masai Russell ran 12.09. Weltklasse did not blink.
Zurich has always been the meet where the season goes to get serious. This year it went somewhere else entirely. Alison dos Santos took the 400m hurdles world record off Karsten Warholm, running 45.80 and shaving 0.14 from the 45.94 Warholm ran in the 2021 Olympic final in Tokyo, a time most people had quietly filed under untouchable.
The crowd had barely sat down. Minutes later Masai Russell ran 12.09 in the 100m hurdles and ended Tobi Amusan's four year reign at the top of the list. Russell has not lost all season, and the only question left in the event is whether a woman goes under 12 seconds, and whether it is her.
45.80 and 12.09, inside the same hour, in the same stadium.
The rest of the night would have been a headline anywhere else. Cole Hocker and Parker Wolfe won the 1500m and the 3000m for the American men.
