Bekele Is Off the Berlin Start List

He joined the field a week ago at 44. Organizers said Thursday that a left Achilles injury has taken him back off it.

A week ago Kenenisa Bekele's name went onto the Berlin Marathon start list and everyone allowed themselves to imagine it. On Thursday, organizers said he is out. A left Achilles tendon injury, picked up late in the buildup.

He is 44. His last completed marathon was the Paris Olympics, two years ago. Berlin was the place to answer that, and now the answer waits again.

Two years since he last finished a marathon, and the Achilles gets the last word.
