Berlin runs on Sunday without the fastest marathon runner in history, who is out injured. Into that hole steps Kenenisa Bekele, 44 years old, back on the flattest road in the sport.
Tigst Assefa is not there to race the field. She says she is attacking a world record that only one woman has come within a minute of since it was set.
Kipchoge set two world records on this course. The mark he left in 2022 has been lowered by 99 seconds.
Kipchoge, now 41, says it keeps going lower. Berlin has never once argued with him.
