The Streak Died on the Fourth of July
Nikki Hiltz ran down Faith Kipyegon at Hayward Field. Five years of unbeaten miles, gone in one homestretch.

Faith Kipyegon had not lost a race at the mile or 1500 meters in five years. On the Fourth of July at the Prefontaine Classic, Nikki Hiltz surged past the three-time Olympic champion in the homestretch and took the mile in 4:17.49, a world lead. Kipyegon did not even hold second. She crossed third.
The undercard was just as unhinged. Tate Taylor, 18 years old, ripped a 19.75 in the 200 into a 0.9 headwind and beat Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo. Five world records have fallen at this meet since 2023. This year it skipped the clock and went straight for the throne.
