Agnes Ngetich ran 1:05:15 in Copenhagen on Sunday, won the world half-marathon title by 50 seconds, and took a single second off the women-only world record. Fifty seconds of daylight on the field, one second on history. She had to dig for the second one.
A $50,000 bonus was riding on the women-only world record. She got it by one second.
Just like at World Cross, she dismantled a world-class field and made the dismantling look administrative. Behind her the Americans turned in the surprise of the day: Emma Grace Hurley ran 1:06:23 for an American women-only record, Weini Kelati and Jess McClain came through right after her, and the 5-6-7 sweep stole team silver from Ethiopia.
